(Part of 2009 Summer Holiday)
Graaff-Reinet in the Karoo is recommended by Lonely Planet as one of the most charming towns in South Africa. Maybe that praise is a bit high, at least there will be some stiff competition from places like Stellenbosch, but the place has its charms. The centre of town has a lot of prime examples of colonial Dutch architecture, some museums and a number of restaurants. We visited the place on a day trip from our base in Nieu-Bethesda. Most people would probably do it the other way around, but for the out of the way charme and just for being difficuilt I prefere our way around.
Graaff-Reinet is almost completely surrounded by the Cambedoo National Park including the Valley of Desolation, which is ironically very easily accessible on tar road. It also offers some hiking, but it gets quite hot out there so we did the simple tourist thing and made sure that we got quickly back to some cold beers.
