Hiking in the Drakensberg may include some typical South African traditions and past times. So far it is the only hiking place where I received an official information pamphlet with details to how to avoid being robbed while being in the hinterland. These tips include:

“Always plan to camp away form well used mountain passes and preferably below the escarpment.”

“ If your camp is raided by bandits in the night, use a whistle to warn the other members of your group, grab your jacket and abandon camp.”

“Have a planned escape route form your campsite and an identified meeting point in case your group becomes split up.” 

Now that is an adventure that not many places have to offer. What is the unlikely scenario that you run into a grizzly while hiking in Alaska against this? The grizzly tries to avoid you, these guys are looking for you. Thrill seeking at its finest.
